Chevalier's Quilts to Be Part of Falsettoland Benefit Concert

By Andrew Gans
03 Nov 2006

Several of Edith Chevalier's handmade quilts will be part of the Nov. 6 Falsettoland concert at New World Stages to benefit Miracle House.

Matthew Wexler, a spokesperson for Miracle House, told Playbill.com that Falsettoland director John Znidarsic was inspired to feature the quilts in the musical after meeting with Chevalier, an American of Trinidadian ancestry.

"She sewed quilts in the early eighties [to raise money] for babies born with AIDS, three of whom are still alive today," said Wexler. "The quilts [Znidarsic has] chosen from her vast collection represent different characters and situations in Falsettoland.

"The quilts are being used as a backdrop for the concert and will be highlighted at different points throughout the evening. Their images reflect children, marriage and family, many of the themes touched upon in the piece. Ms. Chevalier also sewed a Miracle House quilt especially for this production."

As previously announced, the 8 PM concert will feature the talents of Jill Abramovitz (Cordelia), Zachary Allen (Jason), Keith Gerchak (Mendel), Colin Hanlon (Whizzer), Lisa Howard (Trina), Michael Hunsaker (Marvin) and Leisa Mather (Charlotte). Rick Hip-Flores and Joshua Salzman will be the musical directors for the one-night-only performance.

Falsettoland — the final part of Finn's Marvin trilogy (In Trousers, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland) — centers around the planning of a bar mitzvah for Marvin and Trina's son Jason, while Marvin's lover Whizzer becomes stricken with a then-mysterious, fatal disease. Song titles include "The Baseball Game," "What More Can I Say," "Something Bad Is Happening," "Unlikely Lovers," "You Gotta Die Sometime" and "What Would I Do?" The original Off-Broadway cast boasted Faith Prince, Michael Rupert, Chip Zien, Janet Metz, Heather Mac Rae and Stephen Bogardus.

Miracle House, according to press notes, was chosen to present Falsettoland to "acknowledge the 25th anniversary of the AIDS epidemic and honor our organization's history of serving caregivers of people living with HIV/AIDS. Miracle House's founding members began a legacy of hope and compassion and now our doors are open to people seeking critical medical treatment from around the world."

New World Stages, Stage 2 is located in Manhattan at 340 West 50th Street. A pre-show VIP cocktail party will precede the performance. Tickets are still available by visiting www.telecharge.com or www.miraclehouse.org.
