Busy Andrew Lippa Sits Down for Evening of Song with Murney and Gasteyer Dec. 11 in NYC

By Kenneth Jones
10 Nov 2006

Composer-lyricist Andrew Lippa, who penned Off-Broadway's The Wild Party, will sing his own songs — with guests — Dec. 11 at The Metropolitan Room in Manhattan.

The 9:30 PM concert, dubbed Andrew Lippa, Asphalt Beach and Assorted Divas, will feature him at the piano singing songs from his latest shows — and from "his ever-expanding trunk of songs." Jayson Raitt produces.

Expected to be heard are songs from Lippa's newest musical Asphalt Beach. Joining him will be Ana Gasteyer (Wicked, "Saturday Night Live"), Carly Jibson (Hairspray), Julia Murney (Wicked, Lennon) and Kate Reinders (Wicked, Gypsy).

Asphalt Beach "tells the story of what happens to the girls at Our Lady of the Suppressed Desire Academy for Rambunctious Young Girls — a Catholic reformatory school in Asphalt Beach, New Jersey," according to an announcement.

Lippa wrote the book, music and lyrics for The Wild Party (Manhattan Theatre Club), which won the 2000 Outer Critics Circle Award for best Off-Broadway musical of the season and the 2000 Drama Desk Award for Best Music. In 2004 Lippa's A Little Princess (book and lyrics by Brian Crawley) premiered at Theatreworks in Palo Alto, CA. In 1999 Lippa contributed three new songs to the Broadway version of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (including "My New Philosophy" for Tony Award-winner Kristin Chenoweth) and created all new arrangements.

Lippa also wrote the music and co-wrote the book (with Tom Greenwald) for john & jen, which played in New York City in 1995 at The Lamb's Theater. His awards include a Grammy nomination, the Gilman/Gonzalez-Falla Theater Foundation Award and ASCAP's Richard Rodgers/New Horizons Award.

In addition to Asphalt Beach, Lippa is currently writing the scores (music and lyrics) for Disney Theatrical Productions' The Man in the Ceiling (book by original book author Jules Feiffer) and Jerry Christmas (book by Daniel Goldfarb). Lippa is a graduate of the University of Michigan.
