Jim Dale and Glenn Close Reunite for Busker Alley Benefit Nov. 13

By Andrew Gans
13 Nov 2006

Tony Award winners Jim Dale and Glenn Close, who starred in the original Broadway production of Barnum, reunite Nov. 13 for a one-night-only concert version of Busker Alley that will benefit the York Theatre Company.

Tony Walton, who worked with Close on the 1984 production of The Real Thing, directs the concert at Hunter College’s Kaye Playhouse. Show time is 8 PM.

The evening will also feature the talents of John Bolton, Cristy Candler, Bob Fitch, Jessica Grové, Michael Hall, Elizabeth Inghram, George S. Irving, Noah Racey, Anne Rogers, Michael Lane Trautman, Diane Wasnak and Patrick Wetzel. The creative team also includes Lisa Shriver (choreography), Richard Pilbrow (lighting design) and Aaron Gandy (musical direction).

Jay Records will record this cast for future CD release.

Busker Alley, according to press notes, is “about a busker (one who entertains in public on London’s famous streets) who falls in love with a much younger woman who longs to be a big star in the theatre and leaves him to follow her dreams.”

Based on the 1938 British film “St. Martin’s Lane,” Busker Alley features music and lyrics by Richard and Robert Sherman and a book by A J Carothers.

Tommy Tune starred in a pre-Broadway tour of Busker Alley in 1995. Six weeks prior to the musical's Broadway debut, Tune broke his foot during a performance in Tampa, and the show never reached New York.

Tickets, priced $100-$250, are available by calling (212) 772-4448 or by visiting the Kaye Playhouse box office at East 68th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues.
