Jekyll's Noll Will Be Mabel in Eugene Opera's Pirates of Penzance

By Andrew Gans
20 Nov 2006

Christiane Noll, who created the role of Emma in the Broadway production of Jekyll & Hyde, will play Mabel in the Eugene Opera's upcoming production of The Pirates of Penzance.

Noll will join Richard White (as the Pirate King) and Eric Millegan (as Frederic) for the Dec. 29-31 performances of the classic Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. Mark Beudert directs.

The creative team will also feature Nicholas Carthy (conductor), Don Carson (set designer) and Mary Mikkelsen (costume designer).

Christiane Noll, who was part of the out-of-town tryout of The Mambo Kings, made her Broadway debut as Emma Carew in Frank Wildhorn's Jekyll & Hyde. She later joined the Broadway company of It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues and starred in the City Center Encores! production of Out of This World. Noll appeared in the national tours of Grease!, Miss Saigon and City of Angels, and she has recorded three solo albums: "Christiane Noll — A Broadway Love Story" (Varese Sarabande Records), "Live at the Westbank Café," (Car-Jam Records) and "The Ira Gershwin Album" (Fynsworth Alley).

With a book and lyrics by William S. Gilbert and music by Arthur Sullivan, some of the operetta's songs include "When Frederic Was a Little Lad," "Poor Wandering One!," "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General," "A Rollicking Band of Pirates We" and "No, I Am Brave." The most recent Broadway revival of Pirates played the Uris Theatre in 1981. Directed by Wilford Leach, the musical featured a starry cast led by Kevin Kline, Estelle Parsons, Linda Rondstadt, George Rose and Rex Smith.

Show times are Dec. 29 at 7:30 PM, Dec. 30 at 2:30 PM and Dec. 31 at 7:30 PM.

The Eugene Opera is located in Eugene, OR. For more information visit www.eugeneopera.com.
