Billy Elliot Celebrates One Millionth Ticket

By John Nathan
23 Nov 2006

Billy Elliot the Musical opened its doors to the show’s one millionth patron when David Llewellyn traveled from his home in Warrington, North West England, to the Victoria Palace Theatre, London.

To celebrate the landmark, Billy Elliot composer Elton John hosted a special charity gala performance of the show featuring the return (for one night only) of Liam Mower, one of the original stage Billy Elliots.

Also making guest appearances onstage were television’s “X-factor” judges Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh. Director Stephen Daldry created the one-off performance in aid of the children’s charity ThePlace2Be.

Mr. Llewellyn was accompanied by his wife Julie, their daughter Jade (15) and son Bryce (11) who met Sir Elton and Mower.

Billy Eliott, which opened in London in March 2005, is due to arrive in New York in 2008. The Broadway debut is being delayed so the musical's creators — including composer John, librettist Lee Hall and director Daldry — can fine-tune the piece and make some aspects of the story — including details about the UK's miners' union — more accessible to American audiences.
