Don Johnson to Join London's Guys and Dolls

By John Nathan
23 Nov 2006

Don Johnson – star of the television series “Miami Vice" and “Nash Bridges” – is to take on the role Nathan Detroit in the current London production of Guys and Dolls.

Johnson, whose stage credits include the Your Own Thing and Fortune and Men’s Eyes, will begin performances in Januar 2007.

The show’s current Nathan is Patrick Swayze, whose final end-of-contract performance is Dec. 2. Swayze made his London stage debut in Guys and Dolls on July 27. Alex Ferns – best known for his appearance in the BBC television soap “EastEnders” - will replace Swayze from Dec. 4 for a limited season.

Michael Grandage's revival of Frank Loesser's classic musical opened at the Piccadilly Theatre on June 1, 2005, with Ewan McGregor and Jane Krakowski as Sky Masterson and Miss Adelaide, respectively.

The original Broadway production of Guys and Dolls opened at the 46th Street Theatre in November 1950, running for 1,200 performances before closing Nov. 28, 1953. Among the premiere cast were Robert Alda as Sky Masterson, Isabel Bigley as Sarah Brown, Sam Levene as Nathan Detroit and Vivian Blaine as Miss Adelaide. Blaine re-created her role for the 1955 film, which also starred Marlon Brando as Sky, Jean Simmons as Sarah Brown and Frank Sinatra as Nathan Detroit.
