Spring Awakening CD Hits Stores Dec. 12

By Zachary Pincus-Roth
12 Dec 2006

The original cast recording of the Broadway musical Spring Awakening debuts in stores Dec. 12.

Boasting a rock score by the musician Duncan Sheik ("Barely Breathing") and book and lyrics by Steven Sater, the show opened at Eugene O'Neill Theatre on Dec. 10 to rapturous reviews.

Sheik, Sater and cast members from the show will promote the album by performing on Dec. 13 at the Apple Store at 103 Prince Street in Soho in Manhattan. Tom Hulce, one of the Spring Awakening's producers, will moderate an interactive discussion on the show's development.

The album's label, Decca Broadway, is trying to spread word of the musical via radio play on college radio stations, ring tones and iTunes, Variety reports.

The track list is:

1. Mamma Who Bore Me
2. Mamma Who Bore Me (Reprise)
3. All That's Known
4. The Bitch of Living
5. My Junk
6. Touch Me
7. The Word of Your Body
8. The Dark I Know Well
9. And Then There Were None
10. The Mirror-Blue Night
11. I Believe
12. Don't Do Sadness
13. The Guilty Ones
14. Left Behind
15. Totally F******
16. The Word of Your Body (Reprise)
17. Whispering
18. Those You've Known
19. The Song of Purple Summer

Spring Awakening made the jump to Broadway from Off-Broadway's Atlantic Theatre Company, where it opened June 15 and enjoyed several extensions. Broadway previews began Nov. 16.

The musical, directed by Michael Mayer with choreography by Bill T. Jones, is based on Frank Wedekind's 1891 expressionist play, which was scandalous in its day for addressing sex, violence and suicide. Two actors play all the adult roles as an ensemble of young people strut, rant, wonder and wish as their characters search to understand the coming of age that they cannot avoid.

Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff head the cast as, respectively, teens Wendla and Melchior, who are drawn to each other in a world where parents, ministers and teachers create an atmosphere of shame, silence and ignorance.

Also returning in the roles they created Off-Broadway are Skylar Astin (Georg), Lilli Cooper (Martha), John Gallagher Jr. (Moritz), Gideon Glick (Ernst), Brian Johnson (Otto), Lauren Pritchard (Ilse), Phoebe Strole (Anna), Jonathan B. Wright (Hanschen) and Remy Zaken (Thea). New to the Broadway production, as the two adults, are Stephen Spinella and Christine Estabrook.

The Eugene O'Neill Theatre is at 230 West 49th Street. Tickets are available through Telecharge at (212) 239-6200 or online at www.springawakening.com.
