Original "Grinch" Airs on TV, While Stage Version Breaks a Wicked Streak

By Andrew Gans
12 Dec 2006

The animated classic "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" airs on ABC-TV Dec. 12 at 8 PM ET.

Based on the classic Seuss children's story, the holiday tale features the voices of Boris Karloff as The Grinch/Narrator and June Foray as Cindy Lou Who. The 40th anniversary special edition broadcast of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" will include the original 1966 film as well as footage from a "making of" documentary that boasts interviews with director Chuck Jones and the late Theodore Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss.

Meanwhile, the new stage version, Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! – The Musical — also based on the Seuss classic — recently became the top-grossing show on Broadway. For the week ending Dec. 10, the musical at the Hilton Theatre brought in $1,567,295. That was the first time in 100 weeks that any production has grossed more than Wicked, which continues to sell out nightly at the Gershwin Theatre.

Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! — The Musical, according to press notes, is narrated by Max the Dog, who relates "the Grinch's fiendish plan to steal Christmas from the holiday-loving Whos. However, the Grinch soon discovers there's more to Christmas than he bargained for."

Tickets, priced $25-$99, are available by calling (212) 307-4100 or by visiting www.GrinchMusical.com. The Hilton Theatre is located in Manhattan at 213 West 42nd Street.
