Christine Ebersole in Grey Gardens
Christine Ebersole was graced with not one, but two plum roles this year. It just so happened that both roles are in one show - Grey Gardens. In Act I, Ebersole plays Edith Bouvier Beale, the matriarch of the Beale family overlooking the grand Hamptons estate of Grey Gardens. In Act II, which takes place 30 years later, she takes on the role of Little Edie Beale, daughter of Big Edith. Critics have hailed her performance as one of musical theatre's all-time greats, and Off-Broadway she won virtually every award that she could. Now, as the show has transferred to Broadway, the Tony Award seems to be in her sights.
