Terms of Endearment Stage Version Nixed; Mockingbird and Nightingale Fly in to Replace

By Ernio Hernandez
05 Jan 2007

The planned stage adaptation of Larry McMurtry's "Terms of Endearment" has been "postponed indefinitely" at Houston's Alley Theatre and Hartford Stage. Productions of To Kill a Mockingbird (at the Alley) and Nightingale (at Hartford Stage) will replace the work.

The co-production of Dan Gordon's adaptation of "Terms of Endearment" was to play at the Texas stage (March 30-April 29) and then at the Connecticut venue (May 24-June 24). Hartford artistic director Michael Wilson (Enchanted April) was slated to direct with "Dallas" actress Linda Gray starring.

Based on the novel by Larry McMurtry, the stage version of "Terms" was to follow the story of a possessive and difficult mother and her stubborn and free-spirited daughter and their relationship through 30 years. No further information about the cancellation was given.

Alley Theatre has announced that To Kill a Mockingbird, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning Harper Lee novel, will fill in the same time slot. The 1930's small-town Alabama-set story is transposed onto the stage with "a grown-up Scout [the book's narrator, as she] looks back at her childhood, delivering a powerful message about prejudice, injustice, and humanity."

Patrons may use their Terms of Endearment tickets on the same day performance of To Kill a Mockingbird. For further information, call the Alley at (713) 220-5700 or visit alleytheatre.org.

Hartford has also replaced the proposed adaptation with Lynn Redgrave's Nightingale. The one-woman show, which premiered in Los Angeles, will play as the season-ender. Joseph Hardy directs the solo inspired by memories of Redgrave's maternal grandmother Beatrice Kempson, in which the actress weaves together stories passed down from her mother about "one of the lesser-known members of the family" into a tale that is "part speculation and invention" of "this rather chilly, not very lovable woman."

Purchased tickets for Terms of Endearment will be honored for the same date, time and seat for Nightingale. Tickets can also be purchased by calling (860) 527-5151 or online at hartfordstage.org.
