Harry Shearer Stars in Not About the Simpsons Musical

By Zachary Pincus-Roth
08 Jan 2007

Harry Shearer and his wife Judith Owen will perform in the musical-theatre piece that they have written entitled This Is So Not About The Simpsons! (American Voyeurs) on Jan. 18 at Joe’s Pub and Jan. 21 at Barrow Street Theatre.

Shearer is known for voicing numerous "Simpsons" characters such as Montgomery Burns and Ned Flanders.

The presentation is part of the annual Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) Members Conference. The show has been presented in public only once before — a sold-out performance at the 2006 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

According to press notes, "The show finds Owen focused on Los Angeles, delivering musical storytelling filled with sadness, delight, repulsion and empathy; stories of trophy wives who can’t smile for botox; evangelists who dress like hookers and hustlers; waiters and barmen waiting to be discovered, always buff, always auditioning for the drunks and diners of Tinseltown, just in case they're 'someone.' Shearer focuses on Washington and New York, zeroing in on the media bubble that surrounds America, a country in love with two big ideas: its own innocence, and the impossibility of it ever losing, at anything."

Shearer has worked for "The Simpsons" for 18 years. He also has a radio show entitled "Le Show" and has appeared in numerous films, most notably with Christopher Guest in "This Is Spinal Tap" (which he co-wrote) and, most recently, "For Your Consideration."

Owen is a singer-songwriter and humorist who will also perform from her new album, "Here," on Jan. 19 at Housing Works as part of the same conference. Owen has performed songs from the album on NPR and NBC's "Today" show.

Joe's Pub is at 425 Lafayette Street adjacent to the Public Theater, and Barrow Street Theatre is at 27 Barrow Street at 7th Avenue. For more information visit web.joespub.com or www.barrowstreettheatre.com.
