Primary Stages Replaces Deuce with Fugard's Exits and Entrances

By Ernio Hernandez
08 Jan 2007

Primary Stages has replaced plans to offer subscribers tickets to Broadway's upcoming Terrence McNally play Deuce with the New York premiere of Athol Fugard's Exits and Entrances.

In a letter to subscribers, the company notes, "Our earlier decision to collaborate with the commercial producers on [Deuce] was based upon our understanding that our subscribers would be provided with seats, assurance that Primary Stages would not be hurt financially, and that we would maintain our artistic involvement in the production. Unfortunately, we were unable to reach an acceptable agreement and have decided to let the play have a life on Broadway without us."

Originally scheduled for a March 2007 run at the company's new home at 59E59 Theaters, Deuce will now begin previews in April 16 and open May 6 at Broadway's Music Box Theatre. Four-time Tony Award winner Angela Lansbury (Sweeney Todd, Dear World, Gypsy, Mame) returns to Broadway to play opposite fellow Tony winner Marian Seldes (A Delicate Balance) in the new McNally work.

Set in the scribe's native South Africa, Fugard's Exits and Entrances is based on the true story of his relationship with actor André Huguenot. The work focuses on "an idealistic young playwright and a fading middle-aged actor" at both ends of the career spectrum. The work made its world premiere at Los Angeles' Fountain Theatre and has since played at Florida Stage.

Stephen Sachs — who staged both previous runs of the work — returns to direct the New York production at Primary Stages' home at 59E59 Theatres. Original stars Morlan Higgins and William Dennis Hurley reprise their turns as André and The Playwright, respectively.

Primary Stages' current season began with the world premiere of A. R. Gurney's Indian Blood and continued with Southern Comforts. Next, the New York premiere of the Christopher Durang and Peter Melnick musical Adrift in Macao, directed by Sheryl Kaller, is slated for a Jan. 23-March 4 run.
