Jeanine Tesori's Musical Violet to Get New York Revival

By Ernio Hernandez
30 Jan 2007

The Gallery Players will present a revival of Violet, a musical created by Brian Crawley and Caroline, or Change composer Jeanine Tesori.

M. R. Goodley will direct the revival of the musical for the Brooklyn-based company for a Feb. 17-March 11 run. Jeffrey Campos serves as music director, and Vibecke Dahle provides choreography.

The 1964-set musical follows the story of a young woman who sets off on a journey to find a television evangelist who might be able to cure her scar and "along the way, meets a young black soldier who teaches her about beauty, love, courage and what it means to be an outsider," as materials cite.

The musical was penned before Tesori's success with Thoroughly Modern Millie and Caroline, or Change and features the composer's music with a book and lyrics by Brian Crawley, adapted for the stage and based on Doris Betts' short story "The Ugliest Pilgrim."

Playwrights Horizons produced the work Off-Broadway in 1997. Susan H. Schulman directed and Kathleen Marshall choreographed the work featuring Lauren Ward, Michael McElroy and Roz Ryan. The production garnered the 1997 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical and an OBIE Award Special Citation for Tesori's music.

The cast for Violet will include Yolanda Batts, Anne Berkowitz, Brian Michael Flanagan, Julie Galorenzo, Marcie Henderson, Collin Howard, Brad Thomason, Tyler Marcum, Rhyn McLemore, Shad Olsen, Sarah Orr, Jan-Peter Pedross, Julie Rees and Jeremy Ritz.

The design team features Charlie Corcoran (scenic), Lillian Rhiger (costumes) and Michael Riotto (lighting). Fight choreography is by Ian Marshall; Autumn Tilson serves as production stage manager.

Tickets to Violet at The Gallery Players, 199 14th Street (between 4th and 5th Ave. in Park Slope, Brooklyn) are available by calling (212) 352-3101 or online at galleryplayers.com.
