Cast Announced for Off-Broadway Avenue X Revival

By Andrew Gans
14 Feb 2007

Before the Tony-winning Avenue Q, there was Avenue X, an a cappella musical that premiered at Playwrights Horizons in 1994.

Dreamlight Theatre Company will present a revival of John Jiler and Ray Leslee's musical — winner of the Richard Rodgers Award — March 1-17 at the 45th Street Theatre. Chip Klose will direct with musical direction by Peter de Mets and choreography by Jonathan Howard.

The cast for the limited engagement will include Cheryl Alexander, JD Goldblatt, Mitchell Jarvis, Keifer Mansfield, Megan McGettigan, Jonathan Stewart, Jeffery V. Thompson and Anthony Wills, Jr.

Avenue X features book and lyrics by Jiler and music by Leslee. The musical, according to press notes, is "set in a racially divided Brooklyn neighborhood in 1963 [and] captures both the nostalgic harmonies of an innocent age and the rumblings of future discord. As in New York and other American cities in the late 1950s and early 1960s, teenagers gather on stoops and sidewalks to pass the time singing together — the best groups win contests and dream of record deals. In [the musical] the Italian-American and African-American groups wouldn't think of singing together — until Pasquale (Stewart) and Milton (Goldblatt) find that their shared love for the music transcends the escalating racial tension.

The 45th Street Theatre is located in Manhattan at 354 West 45th Street. Tickets, priced $18, are available by calling (800) 595-4849 or by visiting www.tix.com. For more information go to www.dreamlighttheatre.org.
