Turturro Is Last-Minute Replacement for Zoe Caldwell at Feb. 13 Spanish Play

Classic Stage Company's American premiere of Yasmina Reza's dense domestic dramedy, A Spanish Play, which concerns plays within plays and actors taking on multiple roles, got a little more complicated the evening of Feb. 13.

Director John Turturro stepped into the Tuesday evening performance as a last-minute replacement for four-time Tony Award winner Zoe Caldwell. The respected actor subbed for Caldwell, who was resting following a small spill she had taken over the weekend (she's expected back Feb. 14).

In the play, Caldwell plays an actress, who is playing the character of an older Spanish woman having an affair with a building manager (played by Larry Pine).

Audience members were invited to stay and attend the play with Turturro, and also to come back at a later point for free when Caldwell returns.

Nearly all of the audience in this sold-out performance took the news in stride and chose to stay on, a spokesman said.

Turturro's real-life wife, Katherine Borowitz, plays the daughter of the character played by Zoe Caldwell, so on Tuesday Borowitz's mother was played by her husband, and she spent the evening watching her husband have an affair with an older man.

Turturro did not wear Caldwell's red pant suit with the unflattering collar ruffle.

Like many not-for-profits in Manhattan, Off-Broadway's CSC does not have understudies.
