Game Boy Hero Is Addicted to Computer Adventure in New Musical

By Kenneth Jones
01 Mar 2007

Matthew Gandolfo and Robin Rothstein's family-friendly musical, The Game Boy, will have its world premiere by Vital Children's Theatre in Manhattan March 10-April 22.

In The Game Boy, according to production notes, "Chase loves playing games and always being the best, but when he gets too wrapped up in his new, exciting action adventure computer game to spend time with his friends, he learns the hard way that computers are no replacement for people and winning isn't everything."

The pop score is by composer Matthew Gandolfo, with book by Rothstein. Gandolfo and Rothstein co-wrote the lyrics.

Mary Catherine Burke directs a cast that includes Julia Arazi, Kallu Duling, Lance Marshall, Andy McKissick, Kristina Wilson and Tim Woods.

Performances play Vital Theatre Company at 2162 Broadway, 4th floor, at 76th Street.

The design team includes set designer Jesse Poleschuck, lighting designer Kevin Hardy, costume designer Annaluisa Franco, choreographer Vibecke Dahle, musical director Matthew Gandolfo and stage manager Tzipora Kaplan.

Rothstein's play On Deaf Ears has been produced Off-Broadway, regionally, and by various New York City companies. Her short play, Libretto, was a winner of the 31st Annual Off-Off Broadway Festival and will be published by Samuel French, Inc. Another of her short plays, In a Manner of Speaking, was produced at Actors Theatre of Louisville where it was a finalist for the Heideman Award. It is published in "The Best Ten-Minute Plays for Two Actors 2004" (Smith and Kraus). Her monologues are included in various Heinemann and Smith and Kraus "Best of" anthologies.

Gandolfo scored the Off-Broadway musical, Dressing Room, which led to a position as resident composer for Pax Amicus Castle Theatre, where he has created and produced many musicals for young audiences. He recently co-founded Veritas Musicals, a company dedicated to the creation of fairy-tale operas and children's shows.

All tickets are $18. The show is appropriate for children ages three to 12. For reservations call (212) 352-3101.
