"Crash" Oscar Winner Moresco Leads Mantegna and Others in VetStage Benefit Workshops

By Zachary Pincus-Roth
01 Mar 2007

Bobby Moresco, who won an Oscar for co-writing "Crash," will lead two theatre workshops on March 3 at the Elephant Asylum Theatre in Los Angeles to benefit the newly-created VetStage Foundation.

VetStage is an L.A. company comprised of military veterans, primarily from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Moresco, along with the film casting director Sarah Finn and the manager Al Onorato, will first lead an acting workshop from 10 AM to 2 PM. Actors who wish to participate can bring a monologue or a short, two-person scene.

Moresco and the producers Larry Becsey and Mark R. Harris will then lead a writers workshop from 3 PM to 7 PM. The actors Joe Mantegna (Tony winner for Glengarry Glen Ross) and Leslie Ann Warren (Oscar nominee for "Victor/Victoria"), along with Olivia Wilde and Jonathan Tucker — both from NBC's new series "The Black Donnellys," for which Moresco is a writer and executive producer — will read the plays, written by writers who wish to attend. The plays will also be discussed.

The actor and Iraq War veteran Sean Huze founded VetStage to provide an outlet for returning vets, regardless of their level of experience in the theatre. The company's inaugural season will kick off on March 23 with The Wolf, written by Huze and directed by Rick Pagano.

Moresco says he heard about the company from an article in the L.A. Times, which noted that Huze just shot a movie ("In the Valley of Elah") directed by Paul Haggis, the co-writer and director of "Crash" and Moresco's partner on "The Black Donnellys."

"No matter how you feel about the war, these kids fighting deserve our support," he says.

Moresco also served as a producer on "Crash" and a co-producer on the Haggis-written "Million Dollar Baby." His theatre company The Actors Gym has developed and produced many plays in New York and L.A. and has workshopped his screenplays as well.

The Elephant Asylum Theatre is at 6322 Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood, CA. For reservations and more information visit www.vetstage.org.
