Free Reading of Porker Sisters Musical Presented March 6

By Andrew Gans
06 Mar 2007

The York Theatre Company's Developmental Reading Series — coordinated by Jeff Landsman — continues March 6.

A free reading of The Porker Sisters will be presented at 7:30 PM at the York's home at the Theatre at Saint Peter's Church. The cast for the reading includes David Auxier, Beth Blankenship, Hector Coris, Shannon Darin, Lorraine DeMan, Janet Dunn, Steven Eng, Natalie Hull and Mark Sanders.

The Porker Sisters features a book and score by Mark York. The musical, according to the York's official website, is described in this manner: "From the Barnyard to the Big Time . . . the Hogg Sisters from Oinklahoma transform themselves into . . . The Porker Sisters . . . taking a music romp around the world as they spread their sounds of Broadway and Hollywood."

Composer, lyricist and bookwriter Mark York is the music coordinator for Jerry Herman and was the musical director for Cy Coleman and his estate from 1999-2006. Most recently, he was the arranger/pianist for Busker Alley, the Benefit Gala Concert for The York Theatre starring Jim Dale and Glenn Close. In summer 2007 his musical Alice In Wonderland will tour through Europe. He will be performing and musically directing the George White Scandals for The Bandwagon Theatre Co. this April. The world premiere of his musical, Galveston! The Musical, opened July 2003. He has composed numerous musicals, including Rest In Peace, directed and choreographed by Baayork Lee; A Midsummer Night, What Goes Around and The Odd Ducklings; and 11 children's musicals with collaborators Andreé Newport and JK Langlois, including Alice In Wonderland, Matchgirl, Sleeping Beauty, The Toy Shoppe, Treasure Island, Pinocchio and Heidi. As Cy Coleman's music assistant, he worked on Grace, about Grace Kelly, which premiered in Amsterdam 2001; Ostrovsky starring Kevin Kline; and Portraits In Jazz, starring Lillias White and Patti Austin at the Kennedy Center.

The York Theatre Company is located at the Theatre at Saint Peter's Church at 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue. For reservations call (212) 935-5824, ext. 24 or e-mail mjlandsman@yorktheatre.org.
