Grové Replaces Walla in Anne of Green Gables Musical

By Andrew Gans
15 Mar 2007

Jessica Grové, who has been seen on Broadway in Les Misérables and Thoroughly Modern Millie, has joined the cast of the new musical Anne of Green Gables.

Grové replaces Allison Walla as Diana Barry in the Theatreworks/USA production, which begins previews March 23 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Directed by Tyler Marchant, the production will officially open March 29 and play a limited run through May 5.

Based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic novel, Anne of Green Gables features book and lyrics by Gretchen Cryer and music by Nancy Ford, the duo who penned I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road. The cast also includes the previously announced Bethe Austin (I Sent a Letter to My Love) as Marilla Cuthbert, Erick Devine (Seussical, Ragtime) as Matthew Cuthbert, Andrew Gehling (Hello, Dolly! at the Paper Mill) as Gilbert Blythe, Piper Goodeve (The Pursuit of Persephone) as Anne Shirley and Heather Mac Rae (Falsettos) as Rachel. Alison Faircloth and Michael Mendiola are part of the ensemble.

The musical, according to press notes, "follows the journey of the wildly independent and adventurous red-haired orphan, Anne Shirley, who is mistakenly sent to Green Gables to live with an elderly bachelor and his spinster sister. Soon after her arrival, she quickly turns the entire community upside-down with her indomitable spirit and scope for imagination."

The creative team also includes Beowulf Boritt (scenic design), David Woolard (costume design), Clifton Taylor (lighting design), Eric Shim (sound design) and Dave Hab (orchestrations).

Tickets, priced $25, are available by calling (212) 279-4200 or by visiting www.ticketcentral.com. The performance schedule is Fridays at 7 PM, Saturdays at 2 and 7 PM and Sundays at 1 and 4 PM.

The Lucille Lortel Theatre is located in Manhattan at 121 Christopher Street.
