Siblings Clash in Laura von Holt's Giants, at HERE April 6-28

By Kenneth Jones
21 Mar 2007

Studio 42 will give rise to the world premiere of Giants, a highly theatrical new play by Laura von Holt, starting April 6 at HERE Arts Center's Mainstage in Manhattan.

The four-actor piece directed by Jen Wineman is billed as a "mystical, magical and mellifluous masterpiece about the life-or-death sibling rivalry between the last brother and sister standing."

Giants "is the knock-down-drag-out reunion of what's left of Button and Giant's family. Button is diminutive and fiery. Giant, her oversized brother, is a militaristic bully determined to rid her from their war-ravaged island home."

Opening is April 9, following previews. Performances continue to April 28.

The cast features Lisa Barnes, Autumn Hurlbert (Button), Evan Lubeck and Michael Markham (Giant).

Giants is designed by Shaun Fillion (lighting), Ryan Elliott Kravetz (scenery), Christy Leigh Rilling (costumes) and Jane Shaw (sound and original composition).

Studio 42 is a not-for-profit production company "dedicated to supporting New York City's emerging artists, creating new work for the stage and producing theatrical experiences for the contemporary audience." Demos Tsilikoudis is the artistic director; Yasmine Falk is the executive director.

Playwright Laura von Holt was born in Hawaii and is a producer, writer and performer living in New York. She has worked for Dodger Theatricals, Manhattan Ensemble Theater, MCC Theater and The Splinter Group. As the managing director of Studio 42, she assistant directed Truncated, co-produced the 2006 Scattered Festival, appeared in several productions including the award-winning public service announcement for the 2006 Battle of the Bards, and pens the popular downtown theatre adventure column, "Studio 42's Social Diary." Von Holt's current projects include producing her first pin-up calendar as her alter-ego, von Hottie; collaborating on a screenplay; developing new work with her performance collective, The Entire Group; and co-authoring her first romance novel.

Giants is the Sarah Lawrence College grad's first play. Visit www.vonhottie.com.

HERE Arts Center Mainstage is at 145 Sixth Avenue between Spring & Broome.

Tickets are $5-$15. Previews play April 6-8 at 8:30 PM. Opening April 9 is at 8:30 PM. Thursdays-Sundays April 13-28 at 8:30 PM. There is a special matinee performance Saturday April 28 at 4 PM.

For tickets call (212) 352-3101 or visit www.here.org.
