Darren Goldstein Will Play Musical Hack in Gutenberg! Starting April 10

Gutenberg! The Musical!, the critically acclaimed Off-Broadway musical comedy by Scott Brown and Anthony King, will welcome Darren Goldstein to the cast April 10 in Greenwich Village.

Goldstein takes over the role of "Doug Simon," replacing original cast member Jeremy Shamos, whose final performance is April 1. Ryan Karels, the show's current understudy, will play the role from April 3-8.

Directed by Obie Award winner Alex Timbers, Gutenberg! The Musical! also stars David Turner as "Bud Davenport." The extended run of the production, which recently celebrated its 100th performance Off-Broadway at the Actors' Playhouse, is currently scheduled to June 3.

"In this two-man musical spoof, a pair of aspiring playwrights perform a backers' audition for their new project — a big, splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg," according to the producers. "With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic, with the hope that one of the producers in attendance will give them a Broadway contract — fulfilling their ill-advised dreams."

Goldstein's New York credits include Mary Rose (Vineyard Theater), Abigail's Party (The New Group, Lucille Lortel nomination for Best Featured Actor), Terrorism (The New Group), St. Crispin's Day (Rattlestick Theatre), Intimate Apparel (Roundabout).

Turner has just returned from playing Sir Robin in the national tour of Monty Python's Spamalot, for which he received a Helen Hayes Award nomination. He has appeared on Broadway in Tom Stoppard's The Invention of Love (Lyceum), and as Winston in In My Life (Music Box), for which the Playbill Broadway Yearbook cited his work beneath the heading "Valiant Performances Under Adverse Circumstances."

Gutenberg! The Musical! is presented Off-Broadway by Trevor Brown, Ron Kastner, Terry Allen Kramer and Joseph Smith in association with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.

This marks the first Off-Broadway transfer for the acclaimed Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, where Gutenberg! was originally developed in 2003. UCBT showcased an excerpt of the musical at the 2005 New York Musical Theatre Festival as part of the NYMF Comedy Series. It then had its world premiere in a critically acclaimed production at The Jermyn Street Theatre in London in January 2006. All of these presentations and productions were devised and performed by the authors, Scott Brown and Anthony King.

The U.S. premiere of Gutenberg! was presented in September 2006 as part of the third annual New York Musical Theatre Festival, where it received three NYMF Awards, including Excellence in Musical Theatre Writing (Book) for Scott Brown and Anthony King, as well as performance awards for its stars, Jeremy Shamos and Christopher Fitzgerald.

A limited run followed at 59E59 Theaters (Nov. 21-Dec. 31, 2006). The musical then transferred to its current home, The Actors' Playhouse, where it began performances Jan. 16, 2007.

The performance schedule is Tuesday through Friday at 8 PM, Saturday at 7 and 10 PM, and Sunday at 3 and 7 PM through Sunday June 3.

Tickets for Gutenberg! The Musical! are scaled at $35-$65 and are available via Telecharge.com at (212) 239-6200.

All seats for the late performance on Saturday evenings at 10 PM are priced at $35.
