Fisher to Play Six-Show Week in London Music; Mulholland Joins Cast

By Andrew Gans
26 Mar 2007

Connie Fisher, the reality TV winner who heads the cast of the London revival of The Sound of Music, has returned to the musical at the London Palladium following a two-week absence. The singing actress, who has been plagued with vocal problems due to the demands of the role of Maria von Trapp, will now perform six — rather than eight — performances a week.

Beginning in mid-April, the Monday evening and Wednesday matinee performances of Sound of Music will feature Aoife Mulholland as Maria. Mulholland, who is currently playing Roxie Hart in the West End production of Chicago, was a finalist on "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?," the reality television show that cast Fisher in the revival's lead role.

In a statement producer Andrew Lloyd Webber said, "I am thrilled that Connie has returned to the show, fit and well, and welcome Aoife, who gave a sensational audition."

Until Mulholland arrives, Fisher's understudy will perform the role of Maria two performances a week.

The West End revival of The Sound of Music began previews at the Palladium Nov. 4, 2006. Directed by Jeremy Sams, the musical officially opened Nov. 14.

The Sound of Music originally premiered on Broadway in 1959, winning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The 1965 Hollywood film, which starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, won five Oscars, including Best Picture.
