Jewish Take on Midsummer Begins at Abingdon March 28

By Zachary Pincus-Roth
28 Mar 2007

Midsummer Night's Dream: A Comic Jewish Satire will be presented by the Dark Lady Players at the Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex beginning March 28 and lasting until April 1.

The unique take on the Shakespeare play is directed by Mahayana Landowne, with adaptation and dramaturgy by John Hudson.

Press notes say that the show will use Hudson's theory that "Shakespeare's plays contain a Jewish religious allegory" and were actually written by Amelia Bassano Lanyer, a black, Jewish woman who was a published poet in England during the Elizabethan era.

The cast includes Chanelle Benz, Jen Browne, Amanda Bruton, Monica Cortez, Daniela Dakic, Morganne Davies, Lila Dupree, Megan McGrath, Kirsta Peterson, Stephen Squibb and Peggy Suzuki.

The head choreographer is Danielle Quisenberry, and Elizabethan dances are choreographed by Caroline Copeland. Set design is by James Simopoulos, and costume design is by Jess Lane.

The show will play Wednesday through Saturday at 8 PM with matinees Saturday and Sunday at 3 PM.

Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex is located at 312 West 36th Street. For tickets call (212) 868-4444 or visit www.smarttix.com. For more information visit www.darkladyplayers.com.
