In the Heights Tickets on Sale Through July; Matinees Added

By Kenneth Jones
28 Mar 2007

The producers of In the Heights announced added student matinees and a new block of seats for the new American musical about the dreamers who live, work, love and reach high in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan.

Tickets for the commercial run of Quiara Alegría Hudes and Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical comedy are now on sale for performances through July 15. In addition, due to overwhelming demand, 2 PM student matinees have been added on Wednesdays May 16, May 30 and July 11. School groups and group organizers have been showing interest in weekday shows lately, a spokesman said.

The show, pulsing with salsa, hip-hop and musical theatre pop power ballads, has music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, with music direction by Alex Lacamoire, and music arrangements and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman.

A flood of non-traditional commercial theatregoers, and young people jazzed by the pop storytelling have helped make In the Heights a word of mouth sensation on far West 37th Street.

There has been no announcement of a cast album for the score.

Audiences and critics have embraced the show since January previews and its Feb. 8 opening at Off-Broadway's 37 Arts, 450 West 37th Street.

In the Heights is produced by Kevin McCollum, Jeffrey Seller and Jill Furman.

According to production notes, "In the Heights is a new musical about three days in the life of Washington Heights, a vibrant and tight-knit community at the top of the island of Manhattan. It's a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music."

The musical features Andréa Burns, Janet Dacal, Mandy Gonzalez, John Herrera, Christopher Jackson, Robin de Jesús, Priscilla Lopez, Olga Merediz, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Karen Olivo in a cast of 22 that also includes Rosie Lani Fiedelman, Asmeret Ghebremichael, Joshua Henry, Nina Lafarga, Doreen Montalvo, Javier Munñoz, Eliseo Roman, Luis Salgado, Seth Stewart, Rickey Tripp, Michael Balderrama and Stephanie Klemons.

The playing schedule for In the Heights is as follows: Tuesday through Saturday at 8 PM, Sunday at 7 PM, with matinees Saturday and Sunday at 2 PM.

There will be no performances May 20 at 7 PM, May 31 at 8 PM and July 11 at 8 PM. Tickets range from $36.25 to $76.25, and may be purchased by logging on to Ticketmaster.com, by calling (212) 307-4100 or by visiting the 37 Arts box office.
