Mary Poppins Book Writer to Pen Screenplay for "The Young Victoria"

By Ernio Hernandez
03 Apr 2007

Julian Fellowes — book writer of the Mary Poppins musical currently playing on Broadway and in London — will pen the screenplay for the upcoming film "The Young Victoria."

Jean Marc Vallee ("C.R.A.Z.Y.") will direct the film expected to begin production before the end of the year. The Initial Entertainment Group production will be produced by Graham King and Martin Scorsese with Tim Headington and Sarah Ferguson also attached.

Emily Blunt, seen in "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Gideon's Daughter," is attached to play the title role. "The Young Victoria" will "chronicle Queen Victoria's turbulent early years and her romance with Prince Albert through the age that became synonymous with her name," according to a release.

Fellowes has previously penned the screenplays for "Gosford Park," "Vanity Fair" and "Separate Lies." He made his directorial debut with the latter.

Mary Poppins, a co-production by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh, currently plays at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre and is in its third year at the Prince Edward Theatre in London's West End.

Richard Eyre directed the musical with co-direction and choreography by Matthew Bourne. Based on P.L. Travers' tale and 1964 Walt Disney film, the musical features the score of Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman with new songs and additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. Fellowes penned the book.
