"Adelaide's Lament": London Guys and Dolls Closes April 14

Michael Grandage's West End production of Frank Loesser's classic musical Guys and Dolls finishes its run of nearly two years on April 14.

Grandage's revival opened at the Piccadilly Theatre on June 1, 2005, with Ewan McGregor and Jane Krakowski as, respectively, Sky Masterson and Miss Adelaide. Since then the role of Nathan has attracted American actors Patrick Swayze and Don Johnson; the latter finished an extended run in the show on March 31.

The final performance features Samantha Janus as Adelaide, Ben Richards as Sky, Lisa Stokke in the role of Sarah Brown and Andrew Playfoot as Nathan Detroit. The show will be followed at the Piccadilly by the reality television-cast revival of Grease, which officially opens Aug. 8.

The original Broadway production of Guys and Dolls opened at the 46th Street Theatre in November 1950, running for 1,200 performances before closing Nov. 28, 1953. Among the premiere cast were Robert Alda as Sky Masterson, Isabel Bigley as Sarah Brown, Sam Levene as Nathan Detroit and Vivian Blaine as Miss Adelaide. Blaine re-created her role for the 1955 film, which also starred Marlon Brando as Sky, Jean Simmons as Sarah Brown and Frank Sinatra as Nathan Detroit.

Grandage, director of Frost/Nixon, which opens at Broadway's Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on April 22, has said there are plans to transfer his production of Guys and Dolls to New York in 2008.
