Xanadu Tickets Go On Sale April 21; Production Will Feature Onstage Seats

By Andrew Gans
21 Apr 2007

Tickets for the new Broadway musical Xanadu — which is scheduled to begin previews May 23 at the Helen Hayes Theatre with an official opening June 26 — go on sale to the general public April 21.

Tickets, priced $51.25-$111.25, are now available by calling (212) 239-6200 or by visiting www.telecharge.com.

Following in the footsteps of Spring Awakening and Inherit the Wind, the production will also offer onstage seating. A limited number of onstage seats will be available at the box office only for $41.25.

The Xanadu cast will be led by Kerry Butler as Kira; James Carpinello as Sonny; Tony Roberts as Danny; Mary Testa as Melpomeny, the evil muse of tragedy; and Jackie Hoffman as Calliope, the muse of epic. The ensemble will comprise Curtis Holbrook, Anika Larsen, Kenita R. Miller, Andre Ward and Marty Thomas.

Directed by Christopher Ashley, Xanadu will feature choreography by Dan Knechtges and musical direction by Eric Stern. The design team will include David Gallo (set design), Howell Binkley (lighting design), David Zinn (costume design), T. Richard Fitzgerald and Carl Casella (sound design), Zachary Borovay (projections design) and Charles LePoint (wig and hair design).

Xanadu boasts a book by Little Dog Laughed playwright Douglas Carter Beane and utilizes songs from John Farrar and Jeff Lynne's film soundtrack. The musical, according to press notes, "tells the story of one of the nine muses of ancient Greece who comes to earth to inspire the greatest of artistic achievements – a roller disco. Along the way she falls in love, bumps into an old acquaintance and for the first time, feels the desire to create herself."

The 1980 film "Xanadu" was written by Richard Christian Danus and Marc Reid Rubel and was directed by Robert Greenwald. Described as "a fantasy, a musical, a place where dreams come true," the film starred Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly, Michael Beck, James Sloyan, Dimitra Arliss, Katie Hanley, Fred McCarren and Ren Woods. Jeff Lynne and John Farrar composed the film's score.

The Helen Hayes Theatre is located in Manhattan at 240 West 44th Street.
