Campbell to Be Artistic Producer of Hot Summer Nights; Kennedy to Direct

By Andrew Gans
25 Apr 2007

Alan Campbell, recently seen on the New York stage in the Off-Broadway musical Adrift in Macao, has been named artistic producer of Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy, the Raleigh-based professional theatre company.

Campbell's wife, actress Lauren Kennedy, will direct one of the upcoming season's offerings, Romance/Romance, which will play July 5-15.

The Hot Summer Nights season will also include Blithe Spirit, directed by John McIlwee (June 6-17); Dinner with Friends, directed by Jerry Davis (June 20-July 1); Wait Until Dark, directed by John McIlwee (July 25-Aug. 5); Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, directed by Kristen Coury (Aug. 8-19); and Ain't Misbehavin', directed by Matthew-Jason Willis (Aug. 22-Sept. 2).

Alan Campbell, most recently on Broadway in the Tony-winning dance musical Contact, portrayed Joe Gillis in the Los Angeles and Broadway productions of Sunset Boulevard, earning a Tony nomination for his work in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Campbell has been seen Off-Broadway in Adrift in Macao, Avow and Boogie Woogie, and his screen credits include "Jake and the Fatman," "Three's a Crowd," "Another World," "Matlock" and "Homicide."

Lauren Kennedy was most recently seen on the New York stage as the Lady of the Lake in the Tony-winning musical Spamalot. She covered the role of Daisy Hilton in the Broadway production of Side Show and also appeared in the New York companies of Sunset Boulevard and Les Misérables. Kennedy starred in The Rhythm Club and was also a part of the early incarnations of Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years, playing the role that would be played Off-Broadway by Sherie Rene Scott, when Kennedy crossed the Atlantic to star in the National Theatre's revival of South Pacific. Kennedy also appeared in The Ten Commandments: The Spectacle Musical, and her debut solo CD is titled "The Songs of Jason Robert Brown."

Tickets, priced $27.50 (per show) or $150 (season subscription), are available by calling (919) 834-4000. For more information visit www.hotsummernightsatthekennedy.org.
