Lane and Wopat Invited to Catch Me If You Can Workshop

Nathan Lane and Tom Wopat have been asked to be part of the summer workshop of the new musical Catch Me If You Can, "and we would be lucky sons of bitches to have 'em," composer and co-lyricist Marc Shaiman told Playbill.com.
Tony Award-winner Lane (The Producers) would play a harried federal agent and Tony nominee Wopat (Annie Get Your Gun) the father of a young con man in the musical based on the 2002 Steven Spielberg picture. Rehearsals leading to a private presentation will take place July 16-27 in Manhattan.
Tony winner Terrence McNally (Ragtime, Deuce, Some Men, The Full Monty) penned the libretto, and the score is by the Tony Award-winning Hairspray team: music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman.
"The score is as eclectic as the music of the mid '60s was," Shaiman told Playbill.com May 2. "On any given Sunday, you could hear The Rolling Stones or The Beatles on 'Ed Sullivan,' a Frank Sinatra special or 'The Judy Garland TV Show,' teen idols on 'Hullabaloo,' Henry Mancini themes, Dean Martin & The Goldiggers. It is a fantastic palette to draw from."
The Broadway-aimed show (and this developmental workshop) will be directed by Jack O'Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde).
The DreamWorks film told the true story of Frank Abagnale, Jr. (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), a compulsive young con man and the federal agent (played by Tom Hanks) who pursues him over many years. Christopher Walken played Frank Sr.
Nathan Lane starred in an August 2006 workshop of Catch Me If You Can.
A fall 2005 reading featured Matthew Morrison at Frank Abagnale, Jr; Lane as Hanratty; Tom Wopat as Frank Abagnale, Sr; Christine Ebersole as Paula Abagnale; Celia Keenan-Bolger as Brenda and Sara Gettelfinger as Cheryl Ann. The ensemble included Chester Gregory, Shayna Steele, Luther Creek and Mylinda Hull.
