Tarzan to Celebrate One Year on Broadway with Book Signing

By Andrew Gans
08 May 2007

The new Disney musical Tarzan will celebrate its first year on Broadway May 10.

In celebration of the anniversary, co-stars Josh Strickland (Tarzan), Jenn Gambatese (Jane) and Chester Gregory (Terk) will join author Michael Lassell at the Barnes & Noble Lincoln Triangle (Broadway and 66th Street) May 10 at 12:30 PM. Lassell will read excerpts from his new tome, "Tarzan: The Broadway Adventure," and the cast members will perform a few songs from the musical. All four will be on hand to sign copies of Lassell's book.

Tarzan — directed by Bob Crowley — plays Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre, where it officially opened May, 10, 2006. The musical features a score by Phil Collins. Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang wrote the musical's book based on both the Disney film and the original Edgar Rice Burroughs story "Tarzan of the Apes." The creative team also includes Meryl Tankard (choreography), Pichón Baldinu (aerial design), Natasha Katz (lighting design), John Shivers (sound design), Paul Bogaev (music producer/vocal arrangements) and Doug Besterman (orchestrations).

The musical currently features Josh Strickland as Tarzan, Jenn Gambatese as Jane, Merle Dandridge as Kala, Robert Evan as Kerchak, Chester Gregory II as Terk, Timothy Jerome as Professor Porter and Donnie Keshawarz as Clayton. Alex Rutherford and Dylan Riley Snyder alternate in the role of Young Tarzan. Tarzan, according to press notes, begins as "a shipwreck leaves an infant orphaned on the West African shore. The helpless baby is taken under the protection of a gorilla tribe and becomes part of their family. When he eventually encounters his first human — Jane Porter, a curious young explorer — both their worlds are transformed forever."

The Richard Rodgers Theatre is located in Manhattan at 226 West 46th Street. Tickets are available by calling (212) 307-4100 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.
