Faith Prince to Return to Broadway in A Catered Affair

By Andrew Gans

Tony Award winner Faith Prince — of Guys and Dolls fame — will return to Broadway in spring 2008 in the new Harvey Fierstein-John Bucchino musical A Catered Affair. The production, directed by Tony winner John Doyle, will play a Jujamcyn theatre to be announced.

As previously announced, the musical will debut at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre before arriving on Broadway. Performances at the Old Globe will begin Sept. 20.

Prince will portray Aggie Hurley, mother of the bride. Fierstein will play Aggie's brother Winston.

A Catered Affair is based on Paddy Chayefsky's original teleplay and the Turner Entertainment film that was written by Gore Vidal.

The musical — with a book by Fierstein and a score by Bucchino — is set in 1953 Bronx. Press notes describe A Catered Affair thusly: "Funny, heartbreaking and oh so human, this musical play reveals relationships strained to their limits when a couple must decide whether to spend their life savings on a family business or to launch their only daughter's marriage with a lavish catered affair."

Jujamcyn Theaters, Harvey Entertainment/Ron Fierstein and Richie Jackson will produce the new musical.

Faith Prince won a Tony Award for her performance as Adelaide in the Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls and starred Off-Broadway in the Lincoln Center production of A Man of No Importance. Her numerous Broadway credits include Noises Off, Bells Are Ringing, James Joyce's The Dead, Little Me, The King and I, What's Wrong with This Picture?, Nick & Nora and Jerome Robbins' Broadway. Her solo recording, "Leap of Faith," was recorded live at Joe's Pub and is available from DRG Records.

Prince, who was seen earlier this year in the Reprise! Marvelous Musical Mondays staging of Baby, will head the cast of the English National Opera's summer production of Kismet. The June 25-July 14 run will mark Prince's London stage debut.
