"ShowBusiness" Documentary — About Wicked, Avenue Q and Others — Opens in NYC May 11

By Andrew Gans
and Zachary Pincus-Roth
11 May 2007

An actress makes her entrance in Wicked in the documentary "ShowBusiness."

"ShowBusiness" — the documentary that follows the creation of Wicked, Avenue Q, Taboo and Caroline, or Change — opens in New York May 11, with other cities to follow.

Regent Releasing is distributing Dori Berinstein's film, which got attention at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival. The film documents the rehearsals and backstage dramas of the four musicals, all of which opened during the 2003-2004 season. Among the stars appearing in the documentary are Rosie O'Donnell, Idina Menzel, Alan Cumming, Sarah Jessica Parker and Cyndi Lauper.

"ShowBusiness" was an International Documentary Association (IDA) Distinguished Documentary Award Finalist and a feature finalist for Best Documentary of 2006. The film also won the Best Documentary Feature Grand Jury Prize at the 2006 Florida Film Festival.

Berinstein is a Broadway producer whose credits include Legally Blonde, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Enchanted April, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Fool Moon and Golden Child. For television, she was the frequent director and executive producer of "The Isaac Mizrahi Show" and the director and executive producer of "Eavesdropping" with Alan Cumming. Berinstein has worked on the producing team of such films as "Unzipped" (Isaac Mizrahi's documentary) and "Dirty Dancing."

"ShowBusiness" marks Berinstein's debut as a documentary film director. She is currently working on her second feature documentary, "Some Assembly Required," which "follows kids from across the country competing in a national toy invention competition."

"ShowBusiness" is playing Landmark's Sunshine Cinema, located in Manhattan at 143 East Houston Street. Show times are 11:30 AM, 1:45 PM, 3:50 PM, 6 PM, 8 PM, 10:05 PM and 12:05 AM.
