Victoria Clark Will Sing on a Solo Album for PS Classics; Fall Release Expected

PS Classics will be in a studio May 18 to begin recording Tony Award-winning actress Victoria Clark's first solo album, Playbill.com has learned.

Ted Sperling (the Tony-winning co-orchestrator of The Light in the Piazza) will serve as musical director and conductor.

The disc will be produced by Grammy Award winner Steven Epstein, who previously collaborated with Clark and Sperling on the cast recording of The Light in the Piazza.

PS Classics is dedicated to the heritage of Broadway and American popular song. Label co-founder Tommy Krasker told Playbill.com that he anticipates a fall 2007 release for Clark's album.

Although Krasker wasn't yet prepared to reveal any details of her repertoire, he noted that the album has been "many years in the planning."

Victoria Clark received 2006 Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards, as well as a Drama League honor, for her portrayal of protective but domineering mother Margaret Johnson in the critically acclaimed Craig Lucas-Adam Guettel musical The Light in the Piazza at Lincoln Center Theater's Vivian Beaumont Theater. Clark made her Broadway debut in 1985 in Sunday in the Park With George, and has been a Broadway regular ever since (perhaps most notably, she was second-class passenger Alice Beane in Titanic, and Smitty in the revival of How to Succeed…).

In February she co-starred in the Encores! production of Follies with Donna Murphy, Christine Baranski and Victor Garber.

Among Clark's many theatre-and-pop-related albums (among a host of cast recordings) are two recent PS Classics discs: "Jule Styne in Hollywood" and the studio cast album of "Dream True."
