Oscar Nominee Strathairn to Join Off-Broadway's Beauty May 29

By Andrew Gans
15 May 2007

David Strathairn, an Academy Award nominee for his performance in "Good Night, and Good Luck," will join the cast of Off-Broadway's Beauty on the Vine May 29.

Variety reports that Strathairn will succeed Victor Slezak in the role of the murder victim's father. Strathairn will play the final week of the show's limited engagement, which ends June 3.

The Epic Theatre Center production of Beauty on the Vine began performances April 24 at the Clurman Theatre on Theatre Row and officially opened May 2.

Olivia Wilde, who played Irish-American widow Jenny on the just-canceled NBC drama "The Black Donnellys," is featured in a cast that also includes Helen Piper Coxe, Barbara Garrick, Howard Overshown, Jessica Richardson and the departing Slezak.

The design team comprises Narelle Sissons (scenic design), Justin Townsend (lighting design), Ryan Rumery (sound design) and Gabrielle Berry (costume design).

"From mixed-race identities to extreme plastic surgery," read Beauty On the Vine press notes, "[the show] is a romantic fable about the power of the human face in Lindsay Lohan America. When a young female star of right-wing radio is brutally murdered, her husband and father investigate the reasons behind the violence. They discover a world where young women transform themselves to look like their idols and mothers lose their daughters to the illusion of popularity and power."

David Strathairn appeared in the Broadway production of Oscar Wilde's Salome (dubbed "the reading," which also featured Al Pacino) and, before that, Dance of Death, The Three Sisters and Einstein and the Polar Bear. Off-Broadway, he's been seen in Hannah and Martin, Hapgood and Stranger. His screen credits are numerous.

The Clurman Theatre is located on Theatre Row at 410 West 42nd Street. Tickets, priced at $40, are available by calling (212) 279-4200 or by visiting www.ticketcentral.
