Sparks, Parisse and Darragh Read Dark Christmas Tale, Dedalus Lounge, May 25 at Irish Rep

By Kenneth Jones
22 May 2007

Gary Duggan's darkly comic Dublin-set Dedalus Lounge is the latest play to be explored in the Irish Repertory Theatre's New Works Reading Series.

The free 3 PM May 25 reading will feature Patch Darragh, Annie Parisse and Paul Sparks.

In the play, "Danny, Delphine and Daragh are trying to survive in Dublin's fair city," according to Irish Rep. "Their usual haunt is the Dedalus Lounge — best bar in the city. Danny's trying to get a Queen tribute band off the ground. Delphine's struggling with a high profile affair and the fact that her granny's dying and Daragh, well, he can be seen in all places dark and dangerous."

It's billed as "a jet-black Christmas tale of desperation, casual sex, bereavement, shoplifting, bisexuality, rampant disloyalty, copious drinking and Freddie Mercury impersonations."

The Irish Repertory Theatre is located at 132 W. 22nd Street. The event is open to the public. To reserve a seat, call (212) 727-2737.

Playwright Gary Duggan won the Stewart Parker Trust Award for his first full-length play, Monged. Produced by Fishamble Theatre Company and directed by Jim Culleton, Monged was staged at Project, Draiocht and as part of the Westport Arts Festival in 2005. A revival of the show took place in October 2006 in several Dublin venues before transferring to the UK in November as part of the Liverpool Irish Festival.

His second play, Dedalus Lounge, premiered at the Samuel Beckett Theatre as part of the 2006 Dublin Fringe Festival. Devised in collaboration with Pageant Wagon Theatre Company, the show was directed by Alan Kinsella and toured to the Civic theatre in Tallaght and The Helix in DCU. A second tour of the play is currently appearing in several venues around Ireland.

Kara Manning, IRT literary manager, hopes that the reading series will "give playwrights, both emerging and more established, the invaluable opportunity to develop their new work in a supportive, safe environment and will also introduce some Irish playwrights, especially those who might not yet have the New York recognition they merit, to an American audience."

At Irish Rep, Charlotte Moore is artistic director, Ciarán O'Reilly is producing director and Patrick A. Kelsey is managing director.
