Ever-busy stage and screen star Kevin Bacon has joined the cast of the upcoming film based on the acclaimed London and Broadway play Frost/Nixon.

The Hollywood Reporter says Bacon will play Jack Brennan, President Richard M. Nixon's chief of staff. As previously announced, both Frank Langella and Michael Sheen will reprise their stages roles as, respectively, disgraced President Nixon and television talk-show host David Frost for the film. Shooting will begin in late summer.

Ron Howard is directing the film for Working Title Films and Universal Pictures. The cast also includes Sam Rockwell, Toby Jones and Matthew Macfadyen. Rockwell will play journalist James Reston Jr., Jones will portray dealmaker Swifty Lazar and Macfadyen will be British journalist John Birt.

Kevin Bacon has appeared on Broadway in Slab Boys and An Almost Holy Picture. His numerous film credits include "Hollow Man," "Mystic River," "Murder in the First," "The Woodsman," "Digging to China," "The River Wild," "Beauty Shop" and "Footloose." Bacon's upcoming films include "Death Sentence" and "Rails and Ties." He is married to actress Kyra Sedgwick.

According to press notes for the Broadway production, "Frost/Nixon tackles the question: How did David Frost, a famous British talk-show host with a playboy reputation, elicit the apology that the rest of the world was waiting to hear from former President Richard Nixon? The fast-paced new play shows the determination, conviction and cunning of two men as they square off in one of the most monumental political interviews of all time."

Frost/Nixon earned three recent Olivier Award nominations including Best New Play. British Sheen and American Langella (a two-time Tony Award winner) were also Olivier nominated (separately) in the category of Best Actor. The Broadway production, currently nominated for three Tony Awards, plays the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
