"Sopranos" Finale Beats 2007 Awards in Sunday Night "Tony" Battle

By Ernio Hernandez
12 Jun 2007

In the battle of the Tonys, "The Sopranos" was the clear victor (by almost a double margin) in ratings over the 2007 Tony Awards telecast, numbers now reveal.

The HBO show's final episode, which aired 9-10 PM (ET) — concurrent with the second of the three-hour Broadway honors broadcast on CBS — garnered 11.9 million viewers (to the Tony Awards' 6.2 million). (ABC's airing of the NBA Finals averaged 8 million).

The Tony Awards pulled in a 4.5 rating/8 share in its first hour, 4.2/7 the second and 3.8/7 in its last, according to Zap2it. A single ratings point represents roughly 1.102 million households; a share shows the percentage of televisions being used at the time.

Bolstered by the 7 PM airing of "60 Minutes" — which took first place with 6.1/12 — the network averaged a 4.7/8 share for the night.

The first hour of the 2007 Tony Awards placed behind the second hour of NBC's "Dateline," with 5.9/11. ABC's coverage of Game 2 of the NBA Finals (5.0/9) then assumed the lead at 9 PM (but the Tonys remained in second). At 10 PM, the awards telecast dropped to third behind ABC and NBC's "Law & Order: SVU."

Last year, the broadcast was viewed by 7.79 million, up 1.29 million from the previous year's 6.5 million.

Zap2it ratings are "taken from fast national data, which includes live and same-day DVR viewing. All numbers are preliminary and subject to change, especially in the case of live telecasts."
