Broadway Dates Named for McPherson's The Seafarer

The Broadway production of Conor McPherson's The Seafarer, "a chilling new play about the sea, Ireland, and the power of myth," will begin previews Oct. 17 and open Nov. 15 at a Shubert theatre to be announced.
The creative team has also been announced. The Dublin-set play will be designed by Rae Smith (set and costume), Neil Austin (lighting) and Matthew Smethurst-Evans (sound), re-creating their National Theatre work.
The Seafarer received its world premiere in 2006 at the National Theatre's Cottesloe Theatre, earning praise and two Olivier Award nominations including Best New Play for McPherson.
Casting for the five-person production will be announced in the coming weeks.
In the play, according to producers, "It's Christmas Eve and Sharky has returned to Dublin to look after his irascible, aging brother who's recently gone blind. Old drinking buddies Ivan and Nicky are holed up at the house too, hoping to play some cards. But with the arrival of a stranger from the distant past, the stakes are raised ever higher. In fact, Sharky may be playing for his very soul."
As previously reported, Boyett-Ostar Enterprises will produce the play in New York. McPherson is author of The Weir and Shining City.
The role of blind Richard Harkin, played in London by Jim Norton, has been cast for Broadway, although a spring casting notice did not reveal whether it will be Norton, who won a 2007 Olivier Award in the category of Best Supporting Actor.
At the National's Cottesloe, the creative team included director McPherson.
The cast featured Ron Cook as Mr. Lockhart, Conleth Hill as Ivan Curry, Karl Johnson as James "Sharky" Harkin, Michael McElhatton as Nicky Giblin and Jim Norton as Richard Harkin.
