Musical Yank!, About Gays in WWII Military, Gets Brooklyn Run in 2007-08

By Adam Hetrick
25 Jun 2007

The Gallery Players, Brooklyn's Equity showcase theatre, will offer classic, contemporary and new works in its 41st season.

John Guare's award winning Six Degrees of Separation opens the season Sept. 15-30.

The new musical Yank! by David and Joseph Zellnik will run Oct. 20-Nov. 4. The musical taht sold out its 2005 run at the New York Musical Theatre Festival centers on "a war reporter named Stu and an army private named Mitch who fall in love and struggle to survive in a time and place where the odds are stacked against them. Suffused with songs in period style (swing, big band, boogie-woogie) Yank! explores what stories don't get told in wartime, and how WWII became the great catalyst in bringing gay men and women together."

In time for the holidays is the biting cult favorite by David Sedaris, The Santaland Diaries, adapted for the stage by Joe Mantello, Dec 1-16.

Up next is Andrew Lippa's pop-and-jazz-infused take on The Wild Party. The award winning musical will play Feb. 2-24, 2008.

Aristophanes' anti-war classic Lysistrata will play March 15-30, 2008.

Dale Wasserman, Mitch Leigh and Joe Darion's hit Man of La Mancha will play April 26-May 18, 2008.

Concluding the season is the 11th Annual Black Box New Play Festival June 5-29, 2008.
