Abraham, Finneran, Baker to Star in Rebeck's Mauritius on Broadway

By Kenneth Jones
27 Jun 2007

F. Murray Abraham

F. Murray Abraham, Dylan Baker and Katie Finneran will join previously announced Bobby Cannavale and Alison Pill to complete the cast of Manhattan Theatre Club's Broadway production of Theresa Rebeck's Mauritius.

Tony Award winner Doug Hughes will direct Rebeck's Broadway debut (she was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for co-writing Omnium Gatherum), which begins Sept. 13 at the Biltmore Theatre. Opening is Oct. 4.

In the tightly-woven "sinister comedy," according to MTC, "Jackie (Pill) and Mary (Finneran) are half-sisters whose mother's death leaves them in possession of a rare stamp collection. But which sister actually owns the stamps? Which of three men (Abraham, Baker, and Cannavale) can be trusted with their sale?"

Theresa Rebeck's plays include The Scene and Bad Dates.

Hughes is a Tony Award winner for directing Doubt; Tony nominee Pill (The Lieutenant of Inishmore) is wrapping up Blackbird for MTC Off-Broadway; Finneran earned laughs in Broadway's Noises Off revival (for which she won a Tony Award), and was seen in Pig Farm at the Roundabout Off-Broadway; Abraham won the Academy Award for playing Salieri in "Amadeus" and recently starred in The Jew of Malta Off-Broadway; Cannavale appeared in Hurlyburly Off-Broadway and TV's "Will & Grace" (for which he won an Emmy); Baker was last seen on Broadway in La Bête, which earned him Tony and Drama Desk nominations.

Mauritius is a co-production with the Huntington Theatre Company, which recently received the Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Production for the world-premiere production of the play.

Director Doug Hughes is currently represented on Broadway with the Tony-nominated revival of Inherit The Wind starring Brian Dennehy and Christopher Plummer.

The creative team will include John Lee Beatty (scenic design), Catherine Zuber (costume design), Paul Gallo (lighting design)and David Van Tieghem (original music and sound design).

Single ticket information and additional listings information will be announced in the coming weeks.
