Rue McClanahan to Offer Solo Evening, My First Five Husbands…, in Provincetown

By Andrew Gans
28 Jun 2007

Emmy Award winner Rue McClanahan, who was most recently on Broadway as Madame Morrible in Wicked, will debut her new solo show July 16 at Provincetown's Town Hall.

Presented by Tom D'Angora and Michael Duling, the evening is titled My First Five Husbands . . . and the Ones Who Got Away. Show time is 8 PM.

The performance, based on McClanahan's recent autobiography of the same name, is described as "a funny and fiercely revealing romp in which [McClanahan] provides a deliciously entertaining chronicle of her eventful and passionately-lived life. Candidly discussing the challenges she's faced on the road to happiness and creative fulfillment, she shares the loves and losses, hits, flops, laughter, and tears that shaped her development—as well as the hard-won wisdom she has acquired over the course of five stormy marriages and a distinguished acting career that spans more than four decades."

In a recent statement, McClanahan had this to say about "My First Five Husbands," which is available on the Broadway Books label: "[It] is about men I have known, in both the platonic and biblical senses. Some I knew only slightly, some quite well. Some I’ll love always, some I no longer like very much, and there are a few I’d like to strip naked, tie to a Maypole, smear with sweet syrup near a beehive, then stand back and watch. I'll describe a goodly number of these hot dudes — and duds — keeping the nicest man for last, because — if for nothing else — I'd like to leave you with a good taste in your mouth, and Hubbies #3 and #4 might want to make you rush to gargle. There were times I truly wondered, 'Lord, will I EVER get it right?' Thank God I thrive on variety."

Emmy Award winner Rue McClanahan is best known for her work on two classic television sitcoms, "Maude" and "The Golden Girls." Last on Broadway in Stephen Schwartz's Wicked, she has also been seen on The Great White Way in productions of The Women California Suite, Sticks and Bones, Father's Day and Jimmy Shine. Her film credits are numerous.

Provincetown's Town Hall is located at 260 Commercial Street. Tickets, priced $70, are available by calling (508) 487-6424.
