Spring Awakening, Coast of Utopia and Radio Golf Among 2006-2007's Best Plays

By Adam Hetrick
29 Jun 2007

"Best Plays Theatre Yearbook" has announced its selected works from the 2006-2007 theatrical season.

Since 1920 "Best Plays Theatre Yearbook" has published its collection of the best plays of the season, culled from Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway.

The ten plays chosen and the essayists who have written about them follow:
Blackbird by David Harrower (Essay by David Cote)
The Clean House by Sarah Ruhl (Essay by Anne Marie Welsh)
The Coast of Utopia by Tom Stoppard (Essay by Charles Wright)
Dying City by Christopher Shinn (Essay by Charles Isherwood)
Frost/Nixon by Peter Morgan (Essay by Charles McNulty)
The Pain and the Itch by Bruce Norris (Essay by John Istel)
Passing Strange by Stew and Heidi Rodewald (Essay by Alisa Solomon)
Radio Golf by August Wilson (Essay by Christopher Rawson)
The Scene by Theresa Rebeck (Essay by Chris Jones)
Spring Awakening by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik (Essay by Michael Feingold)

This marks the 88th edition of the annual chronicle, since its inception in 1920 by Burns Mantle. A total of 37 plays were considered as finalists for the publication by editor Jeffrey Eric Jenkins and a board that included Tish Dace, Christine Dolen, Sylviane Gold, Robert Hurwitt, John Istel, Chris Jones, Charles McNulty, Julius Novick, Christopher Rawson, Alisa Solomon, Jeffrey Sweet, Anne Marie Welsh, Linda Winer and Charles Wright.

"Best Plays Theatre Yearbook" includes a summation and discussion of the year in theatre, as well as essays, facts and figures regarding the American theatrical season and the productions produced.

"The Best Plays of 2006-2007" will be published by Limelight Editions in 2008. For further information visit www.bestplaysonline.com.
