After Oratorio, Spamalot Creators Idle and Du Prez Consider Creating a Ballet

By Kevin Shihoten
05 Jul 2007

Comedian Eric Idle and composer John Du Prez, creators of the Tony-winning musical Spamalot, are at work on a new ballet, according to New York Magazine.

In June the pair debuted their oratorio Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy), based on the film "Monty Pynthon's Life of Brian," at the inaugural Luminato festival in Toronto.  The performance, which Idle said would be "funnier than Handel, though not as good," featured himself as the narrator, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, vocal soloists and members of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir led by Peter Oundjian (who is Idle's first cousin).

"John and I are always interested in doing something nobody wants, so that [ballet] seemed to be the natural thing," he told New York about the new project. "It's perfect."

Spamalot continues to play New York's Shubert Theatre.
