RI's Historic Theatre By the Sea Reopens Its Doors with Forum

By Adam Hetrick
06 Jul 2007

After remaining dark for three years, Rhode Island's historic Theatre By the Sea will officially reopen its doors in August.

The Stephen Sondheim, Larry Gelbart, Burt Shevelove musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum will welcome audiences back with performances beginning Aug. 8.

New Theatre By the Sea owner, Bill Hanney, has teamed up with Amiee Turner, who will serve as producing artistic director. Turner is familiar with the season premiere, as she appeared in the 1996 Broadway revival of Forum starring Nathan Lane. In addition, Joel Kipper has signed on as Theatre By the Sea's managing producer.

The historic theatre began its professional summer series in 1933. However, in 2003, the theatre's owners closed the doors on the venue in order to pursue other professional interests. In June 2007 entrepreneur Bill Hanney purchased the Rhode Island landmark and assembled a producing team in order to reinstate the professional theatre.

Producing artistic director Amiee Turner said in a statement, "We are all very excited to be able to give audiences just a taste of what's to come. Bill has made a significant commitment to this property and its legacy. Joel and I are excited at the prospect of being a part of its future with him… Forum is one of America's greatest and best loved musical comedies and a true celebration of theatre. We all feel it is the perfect way to celebrate the reopening of this historic Rhode Island landmark."

For ticket information call Theatre By the Sea's box office at (401) 782-8587 or visit www.theaterbythesea.com.
