Butz, Kennedy and Mann Recently Took a Honeymoon in Vegas

By Andrew Gans
31 Jul 2007

Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz as well as Lauren Kennedy and Terrence Mann recently took part in a reading of the new Jason Robert Brown musical Honeymoon in Vegas.

According to Brown's official website, the threesome were part of a two-week workshop in Manhattan of the entire musical. Brown writes, "It was so unbelievably awesome that my head exploded. We're waiting right now to find out what the next step is, but I'm very excited about the show, and can't wait for you all to see it."

The musical, based on the 1992 comedy of the same name, features a score by Tony winner Brown and a book by Andrew Bergman, who penned and directed the original film. The musical, according to Brown's website, "tells the story of commitment-phobe Jack Singer, his not-so-patient girlfriend Betsy, and a professional gambler named Tommy Korman who hasn't gotten over his wife's death. It's also the story of a Hawaiian show-tune queen, a Las Vegas icon, a guy named Foccaccia and a team of flying Elvises."

Brown's other projects include the upcoming London premiere of Parade and the Broadway-bound musical 13. About the latter he writes, "[The] light is visible at the end of this particular tunnel, and I think by the end of this month, I'll have some really exciting news for you about the next step. Meanwhile, for those of you who have been asking about auditions, it's still a little early. We did do some preliminary casting calls up at Stagedoor Manor and French Woods (and the kids were amazing), but that was really just because a lot of folks on the creative staff were all in the same town at the same time. The serious auditions won't happen until October or November at the earliest."

Jason Robert Brown, who was the musical director and arranger for the musical Urban Cowboy, won the Tony Award for Best Score for his Broadway debut, Parade. His two-person musical, The Last Five Years, played a brief run at Off-Broadway's Minetta Lane Theatre, and was preserved on Sh-K-Boom Records. Brown also composed the score for Songs for a New World and wrote incidental music for Fuddy Meers, Kimberly Akimbo, The Waverly Gallery and the Irish Repertory Theatre's production of Long Day's Journey Into Night.
