Fall Mufti Season to Include Baker's Wife and Zorba

By Andrew Gans
31 Jul 2007

Four musicals featuring a book by Joseph Stein will comprise the fall Musicals in Mufti series at the York Theatre Company.

The series, which presents "musical theatre gems in staged concert performances," will kick off with Zorba, Sept. 14-16. The musical, based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, features a score by John Kander and the late Fred Ebb.

Enter Laughing, which was originally titled So Long, 174th Street, will follow, playing Sept. 28-30. The musical features a score by Stan Daniels.

Joseph Stein co-wrote the book for The Body Beautiful — the third entry of the fall season — with Will Glickman. The Oct. 12-14 mounting of the musical will be its first New York presentation in half a century. The Body Beautiful features a score by Sheldon Harnick (lyrics) and Jerry Bock (music).

The Baker's Wife, the musical that spawned the cabaret favorite "Meadowlark," will conclude the season, running Oct. 26-28. The York run of the Stephen Schwartz (score)-Stein (book) musical will feature the most recent version of the show's script.

Five performances of each show will be presented: Fridays at 8 PM, Saturdays at 2:30 and 8 PM and Sundays at 2:30 and 7:30 PM. Audience discussions follow the matinee performances.

The Mufti series is presented at the Theatre at Saint Peter's, which is located at 54th Street, east of Lexington Avenue. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (212) 935-5820 or visit www.yorktheatre.org.
