Quentin Will Return to London Stage in a Scandal

By John Nathan
08 Aug 2007

Hampstead Theatre has announced that comedic actress Caroline Quentin will return to the London stage in the world premiere of Robin Soans' latest verbatim play Life After Scandal.

Quentin, who is best known for the hit television sitcom "Men Behaving Badly," will play Christine Hamilton, wife of the disgraced Conservative politician Neil Hamilton. Quentin's previous stage performance was in the National production of The London Cuckolds in 1998.

Life After Scandal will be helmed by the Hampstead's artistic director Anthony Clark; the production will open at the North London venue on Sept. 25 following previews that begin Sept. 20. The play is the product of a series of interviews during which Soans talked to the real-life players of some of Britain's most notorious scandals.

"Scorned politicians, powerful PRs, disgraced aristocrats and the photographers who, perhaps unwittingly, sow the seeds of scandal, all talk openly to Soans, renowned for his fearless interview technique. Life After Scandal brings these very personal stories together to illustrate the after-effects of such devastating exposure. In the process, Soans reveals the extent to which we feed and are fed by scandal to avoid the more pressing questions about the way we live."

As an actor Soans has appeared in over 80 plays, including work at The National Theatre in London, The Royal Court, The Royal Shakespeare Company, Hampstead, The Tricycle, The Bush, The Young Vic and The Globe. Soans' previous verbatim works include Talking to Terrorists and The Arab-Israeli Cookbook.

Joining Quentin in Clark's production will be Michael Mears (You Never Can Tell), who plays Hamilton's husband Neil; Philip Bretherton; Geraldine Fitzgerald; Bruce Alexander; and Simon Coats.

Following Life After Scandal, the Hampstead will host the world premiere of Antony Sher's The Giant in November. Sher's play focuses on the carving of Michelangelo's David.
