Lance Bass Gets Corny for Broadway, Joining Hairspray Aug. 14

By Kenneth Jones

Lance Bass becomes the second 'N Sync member to make it to Broadway when he assumes the role of Corny Collins in Hairspray Aug. 14, a day before the fifth anniversary of the hit musical's opening.

Joey Fatone, his boy-singer pal from the now-disbanded pop group, has appeared as Mark in Rent and Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors. In Hairspray, Bass plays Corny, the charming Baltimore TV dance-show host, through Jan. 6, 2008, according to a spokesperson.

Bass is with Hairspray during the period following the July release of the movie version of the Marc Shaiman-Scott Wittman-Thomas Meehan-Mark O'Donnell smash. That film — co-starring John Travolta and newcomer Nikki Blonsky — has brought in over $92 million at the box office thus far.

Bass and his 'N Sync pals (including Justin Timberlake, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick and JC Chasez) were a music sensation in the last decade, releasing albums "'N Sync," "Home for the Holidays," "Celebrity," "No Strings Attached," "The Winter Album." Information about the group is still at www.nsync.com.

Bass can currently be seen in the summer film "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry." He will release his autobiography, "Out Of Sync," in October. For more information about Mississippi native Lance Bass, visit www.myspace.com/basslance.

The Hairspray troupe at the Neil Simon Theatre includes Paul Vogt as Edna, Shannon Durig as Tracy, Ashley Spencer as Amber, Niki Scalera as Penny Pingleton, Jerry Mathers as Wilbur, Ashley Parker Angel as Link Larkin, Tevin Campbell as Seaweed, Darlene Love as Motormouth Maybelle and Naturi Naughton as Inez.

In Hairspray "it's 1962 — the '50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion — to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, 'The Corny Collins Show' and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a plus-size trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do?"

Hairspray is directed by Jack O'Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell; scenic design is by David Rockwell; costume design is by William Ivey Long; lighting design is by Kenneth Posner; and sound design is by Steve C. Kennedy.

Hairspray will celebrate its fifth anniversary on Broadway Aug. 15. It's the winner of eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
