New Works by Grote and Baker Will Spike Rorschach Troupe's 2007-08 Season in DC

By Kenneth Jones
15 Aug 2007

Rorschach Theatre's eighth season in Washington, DC, will include two world premieres — including one tale that will unfold in "episode" form.

Randy Baker's The Dream Sailors will make its world premiere in episodes in April, May and June 2008.

In it, according to the company, "four friends, drawn together by their uniquely powerful ability to 'lucid dream,' awaken to make a grim discovery in their basement. Their worlds turned upside down, they must return to the dark landscape of their dreams for answers. But what lurks there might destroy them all."

The play will be seen in four parts, with a new hour-long play premiering every three weeks.

Jason Grote's This Storm Is What We Call Progress will premiere in July-August 2008. Grote penned the regionally hot, New York City-aimed play 1001. In This Storm "a young man stumbles into a dusty old recording studio haunted by ghosts and run by a sinister old woman and her beautiful assistant. In this ancient and powerful place he is drawn into a world of Jewish mysticism and kabalistic ritual and discovers that he may be more than he thought, quite possibly even the Messiah."

Co-artistic director Jenny McConnell Frederick will direct.

Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy about human resilience, The Skin of Our Teeth, will play February 2008.

David Grimm's play Kit Marlowe, about the life and times of Shakespeare contemporary Christopher Marlowe ("playwright, poet, spy and sexual outlaw"), opens the season in November 2007. It will be presented in association with the Shakespeare Theatre Company's Marlowe Festival.

Jenny McConnell Frederick and Randy Baker are the troupe's artistic directors. Artistic partners are Tim Getman, Scott McCormick, Grady Weatherford and Rahaleh Nassri.

Rorschach Theatre performs at The Sanctuary Theatre, Casa del Pueblo Methodist Church, 1459 Columbia Road NW, in the Columbia Heights area of Washington, DC.
