The Angle of the Sun, with Broadway's Watkins, to Play NYMF

By Adam Hetrick
16 Aug 2007

The Angle of the Sun, the new musical by Rachel Lampert and Larry Pressgrove, will be presented by Bridge Club Productions as part of the 4th annual New York Musical Theatre Festival.

The musical, with book and lyrics by Lampert and a score by Pressgrove, premiered at the Kitchen Theatre, in Ithaca, NY. Original cast member Jesse Bush, whose regional credits include South Pacific for the Hangar Theatre and Sweeney Todd at Goodspeed Opera House, will be joined by Broadway veteran Amanda Watkins (Urinetown, Beauty and the Beast, Cabaret, Cats) for the NYMF production.

The Angle of the Sun is described in press notes as a musical "about the seductive tug of art and love; ambition and sex; Soho lofts and Arkansas streams. With joie de vivre, reckless abandon and a compulsive need to laugh at life, painter Jan Frankel takes us from 1966 to 1986 as she moves through the fog of first love to the bracing clarity of honest artistic vision. The score spans a wide range of styles including a haunting country lullaby, a witty, acerbic urban duet and a sweeping celebration of new love."

Karen Azenberg will direct The Angle of the Sun with a creative team including set designer Steve TenEyck and lighting designer Daniel Meeker with sound design by Rep Studio. John Bell serves as musical director.

The Angle of the Sun runs Sept. 17–29 at The Sage Theater, located at 711 Seventh Avenue, in Manhattan. For tickets visit www.nymf.org or call (212) 352-3101.

The Sept. 17 opening of The Angle of the Sun marks the 100th production produced by the New York Musical Theatre Festival.
